Dell Latitude 5591 upgrades

Dell Latitude 5591 (2018, CM246 chipset) is one of the few Latitudes with a socketed CPU (Intel mobile PGA rPGA946B). Do not confuse with the Latitude 5590, which has a soldered BGA U-series CPU. RAM ceiling is 32 GB; 32 GB SO-DIMMs fail to POST. Platform is DDR4-2666 / PCIe 3.0 only - ignore third-party claims of DDR4-3200 or NVMe Gen 4/5 support. 64-bit OS required to use all memory.

Two user-accessible 260-pin DDR4 SO-DIMMs, no soldered RAM. Hard 32 GB ceiling: 32 GB single modules do not POST, so 2x16 GB is the max. DDR4-3200 modules work but downclock to 2666 MT/s. Non-ECC unbuffered only; matched pairs recommended.

Primary M.2 2280 is combo SATA/NVMe (PCIe 3.0 x4). 2.5" bay needs a 7 mm drive and Dell caddy/cable; Dell only ships the second-drive hardware with original config, so buy a dual-drive unit or source third-party brackets. WWAN slot can take an M.2 2230 SSD (listed max 256 GB) with a 2230-to-2242 adapter. Capacities listed are Dell config maxima, not verified hard limits; Gen 4/5 SSDs run at Gen 3 speed.

Rare socketed laptop: CPU is replaceable. Physical socket is Intel mobile rPGA946B (Socket G2), NOT desktop LGA1151v2 - that value is used only as the closest allowed 8th-gen Intel enum, so never buy a desktop chip. Dell validates only i5-8300H, i5-8400H and i7-8850H (35 W cTDP); other Coffee Lake-H parts may not work with the BIOS/thermal solution. No discrete GPU option.
