RAM: DDR4-3200 SO-DIMMs, up to 64 GB
The Latitude 5540 has two SO-DIMM slots, and no memory is listed as soldered to the board. The memory type depends on the processor: DDR4 is supported on 13th Gen Intel Core U-series chips such as the i5-1345U, while DDR5 is for P-series models only. A DDR5 kit will not work in your laptop.
Modules come in 8, 16 or 32 GB. Dell lists these DDR4-3200 configurations: 1 x 8, 2 x 8, 1 x 16, 2 x 16 and 2 x 32 GB, in single- or dual-channel. The minimum is 8 GB and the maximum is 64 GB (2 x 32 GB). Use two matched modules for dual-channel performance; a single module runs in single-channel mode.
Dell's manuals disagree slightly on speeds. The current US and India pages list 3200, 4800 and 5200 MT/s, while an older manual copy, the Technical Guidebook and the System Guide list only 3200 and 4800. The faster speeds apply only to DDR5 P-series models, so for your i5-1345U the limit is DDR4 at 3200 MT/s. Dell's documents don't say whether ECC memory is supported, so stick to standard non-ECC SO-DIMMs.
Buying tips
- Look for DDR4-3200 SO-DIMM (laptop-size) modules and avoid anything labelled DDR5.
- Buy a matched pair, such as 2 x 16 GB, for dual-channel.
- For the maximum 64 GB, you need two 32 GB modules.
- Choose standard non-ECC modules; ECC support isn't confirmed.

Storage: M.2 NVMe SSDs in one or two slots
Slot 1 accepts M.2 2230 or 2280 SSDs and is PCIe Gen4 x4 NVMe. Dell lists capacities up to 2 TB for 2230 drives and up to 1 TB for 2280 drives, so a 2 TB drive has to be a 2230. Self-encrypting drives are 2230 and top out at 256 GB. Gen3 NVMe drives are reportedly fine too, according to a third-party guide. SATA drives are not listed, and there is no 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch bay.
Slot 2 is an optional dual-storage slot that takes 2230 drives only. Check that your unit actually has this slot present and wired before you buy a second drive. One older copy of the manual mentions only a single 2230 slot, while newer Dell documents describe Slot 1 plus the optional second 2230 slot.
Drive thickness matters. Dell's Technical Guidebook lists 2230 drives of 256 GB to 1 TB at about 3.5 mm thick and the 2 TB 2230 at about 2.38 mm. The 2280 drives are also listed at 2.38 mm, but the inch figure printed beside it doesn't match, so treat the 2280 height as unconfirmed and check Dell's listed options. Also note that the Wi-Fi card (M.2 2230) and the optional WWAN card (M.2 3042/3052) use their own slots and are not storage slots.
Buying tips
- Choose an NVMe drive; don't buy SATA M.2 drives.
- If you want 2 TB, buy a 2230 drive. 2280 options are listed only up to 1 TB.
- Buy only 2230 drives for Slot 2.
- Check drive thickness against Dell's listed options before buying.
- Don't mistake the Wi-Fi or WWAN slot for a free storage slot.

How to upgrade
Before you start
- Back up your important files, or make a full backup, before opening the laptop.
- Have the Dell owner's manual for the Latitude 5540 open for the exact disassembly and part-removal steps.
- Confirm you are buying DDR4-3200 SO-DIMMs, not DDR5.
- If you plan to use a second SSD slot, check that your unit has it.
- Use a small screwdriver set and work on a clean, flat surface.
Steps
- Back up your data
Copy your files to an external drive or cloud storage. This matters most if you are replacing the SSD. - Power off and unplug
Shut the laptop down fully (not sleep or hibernate) and unplug the charger and any accessories. - Ground yourself
Touch an unpainted metal surface or use an anti-static strap before handling internal parts, and hold modules and drives by their edges. - Open the case
Follow Dell's owner's manual to remove the base cover and disconnect the battery as it describes. Keep track of the screws you remove. - Install the memory or SSD
For RAM, seat the SO-DIMMs in the two slots, using a matched pair for dual-channel. For an SSD, fit a 2230 or 2280 NVMe drive in Slot 1, or a 2230 drive in Slot 2 if your unit has it. The manual shows how to release and secure each part. - Close the case
Reconnect anything you disconnected, refit the base cover and screws, then plug the charger back in. - Check the system sees the new part
Start the laptop and enter the BIOS setup to confirm the new memory amount or drive is detected. If a new SSD is blank, you will need to install or restore an operating system before it is usable.
Good to know
- Dell's manuals disagree on listed memory speeds (3200/4800 versus 3200/4800/5200 MT/s). The 5200 figure applies only to DDR5 P-series models, so it doesn't affect the i5-1345U.
- Dell's documents don't say whether ECC memory is supported. Use standard non-ECC SO-DIMMs, and confirm with Dell if you need anything else.
- Slot 2 depends on your configuration, and one older manual copy mentions only a single 2230 slot. Check your unit before buying a second drive.
- The 2280 drive height is unverified because Dell's table gives conflicting millimetre and inch figures.
- Dell's documents we checked don't cover memory card or other proprietary slots, so we can't confirm either way.
- This guide covers memory and storage only; no processor upgrade is listed for this model.
