Dell Latitude 5400 upgrades

Released 2019 · on sale

CPU is soldered (BGA Whiskey Lake U: i3-8145U, i5-8250U/8265U/8365U, i7-8665U) - no CPU slot and no CPU upgrade possible. Both RAM slots are user-accessible. Storage and RAM upgrades require removing the bottom cover; no optical drive or other expansion slots relevant here.

2x SO-DIMM DDR4, up to 32GB total 2 × DDR4 / SSD / HDD SO-DIMM · up to 32 GB total · 2666 MT/s

Two user-accessible SO-DIMM slots, no soldered RAM. Dell ships DDR4-2666 modules, but the Whiskey Lake CPU officially supports DDR4-2400, so faster modules downclock to 2400. Any DDR4 SO-DIMM (2133–3200) works; 2x16GB = 32GB max. Non-ECC, unbuffered only.

1x M.2 2280 NVMe or 2.5in SATA (caddy) SSD / HDD M.2 2280 / 2.5" (NVMe / SATA) · max 7 mm thick

One storage position only: either an M.2 2280 PCIe NVMe SSD (PCIe 3.0 x4) or, on HDD-configured units, a 2.5in SATA drive up to 7mm thick. Converting to 2.5in SATA needs the Dell drive bracket and the SATA cable, which are often missing on SSD models. No documented capacity cap; Dell's catalog tops out at 1TB.
