Dell Inspiron 15 3511 Upgrade Guide: RAM, SSD and CPU

Updated Oct. 10, 2026 · Written from this device's verified specifications

This guide covers what you can upgrade in the Dell Inspiron 15 3511 (also sold as Inspiron 15 3000 / P112F): memory, storage and the processor. The short answer: RAM and storage are upgradable, with a 16 GB RAM ceiling and room for an M.2 NVMe SSD plus, on some units, a 2.5" drive. The CPU should be treated as fixed.

At a glance

  • RAM: two DDR4 SO-DIMM slots, 16 GB total officially supported, up to 3200 MT/s.
  • Storage: one M.2 2230/2280 NVMe slot (PCIe Gen3 x4), up to 1 TB for 2230 and 2 TB for 2280.
  • Extra storage: one 2.5" SATA bay, up to 2 TB, but not on units with the 54 Whr battery.
  • CPU: Dell's documents don't name a socket; chips like these are normally soldered, so plan on no CPU upgrade.
  • Check your exact configuration against your service tag before buying parts.

RAM: two DDR4 SO-DIMM slots, 16 GB officially

The Inspiron 15 3511 has two SO-DIMM slots that take DDR4 modules. Dell lists 4 GB, 8 GB and 16 GB modules, with a minimum of 4 GB and a maximum of 16 GB in total. No soldered memory is listed, so both slots are user-accessible. Dell's factory configurations include 4 GB (1x4), 8 GB (1x8 or 2x4), 12 GB (4+8) and 16 GB (2x8 or 1x16).

There is a wrinkle in Dell's numbers: 16 GB modules are listed per slot, yet the stated maximum total is 16 GB. That means two 16 GB modules (32 GB) is not officially supported, and we found nothing confirming that it works. Stick to 16 GB total if you want a guaranteed result.

Speed depends on the graphics in your unit: 2666 MT/s with integrated graphics and 3200 MT/s with discrete graphics. Dell doesn't say whether faster modules would run faster in an integrated-graphics unit. Some units ship with one module installed and a free slot, while others come with both slots already filled, so you may need to replace a module rather than add one. ECC and registered modules are not listed; use standard consumer SO-DIMMs.

Buying tips

  • Buy DDR4 SO-DIMM (laptop-size) modules, not desktop DIMMs.
  • For a 16 GB total, one 16 GB module or two 8 GB modules are both within Dell's limit.
  • Don't count on 2x16 GB (32 GB); it is not officially supported.
  • Check how many modules your unit already has before ordering.
  • Expect 2666 MT/s on integrated graphics even if you buy faster modules.

Storage: M.2 NVMe SSD plus an optional 2.5" SATA bay

The main upgrade is the M.2 2230/2280 slot, which takes an NVMe SSD running at PCIe Gen3 x4. Dell lists up to 1 TB for 2230 drives and up to 2 TB for 2280 drives. Don't confuse it with the separate M.2 2230 slot that holds the Wi-Fi/Bluetooth card; that one cannot hold an SSD. A faster PCIe Gen4 drive may physically fit but will be limited to Gen3 speeds.

There is also one 2.5" SATA drive bay. Dell lists a 5400 rpm 2.5" hard drive of up to 2 TB. Dell's documents describe the laptop as supporting a 2.5" drive, an M.2 SSD, or both together. Units with the 54 Whr battery do not support a 2.5" drive and may lack the bracket or cable, so check your configuration first. Dell gives no thickness limit for the 2.5" drive.

Dell also lists the Intel Optane H20 (32 GB plus 512 GB SSD) for the M.2 2280 slot. Its page says Optane H20 is supported on 11th-gen Intel processors only, and the spec PDF mentions both H20 and H10, so units with 10th-gen, Pentium or Celeron chips may not support it. For a simple upgrade, a regular NVMe SSD is the safer choice.

Besides these, there is an SD card reader (SD, SDHC, SDXC), which is not a storage upgrade slot. No 3.5" bays or proprietary expansion slots are listed.

Buying tips

  • Buy an NVMe M.2 SSD in 2280 (up to 2 TB) or 2230 (up to 1 TB); a SATA M.2 drive is not what Dell lists.
  • Gen4 SSDs will work only at Gen3 speed here, so a Gen3 drive saves money.
  • Only one M.2 slot takes an SSD; use the 2.5" bay for extra capacity.
  • Confirm your unit doesn't have the 54 Whr battery before buying a 2.5" drive.
  • Skip Optane unless your unit has an 11th-gen Intel chip.

How to upgrade

Before you start

  • Find your service tag and check your exact configuration (battery, graphics, drive) on Dell's support site.
  • Check how many RAM modules and which drives are installed now.
  • Back up your files, or plan to clone your current drive before swapping it.
  • Download the Inspiron 15 3511 service manual from Dell for exact disassembly instructions.
  • Have a small screwdriver and an anti-static strap or a bare metal surface to touch ready.

Steps

  1. Back up your data
Copy important files to an external drive or cloud storage. If you are replacing the SSD, make sure you have a way to reinstall or clone Windows.
  2. Power off and unplug
Shut the laptop down fully, not just sleep, and disconnect the charger and any USB devices or cables.
  3. Ground yourself
Touch bare metal or wear an anti-static strap before handling parts, and hold modules and drives by their edges.
  4. Open the case
Follow Dell's service manual for removing the base cover and disconnecting the battery as it directs. Exact screws and steps are in the manual.
  5. Install the new part
Seat the RAM module or M.2 SSD in its slot as shown in the manual, or fit the 2.5" drive in its bay if your unit supports it. Make sure the right slot is used: the Wi-Fi card sits in a separate M.2 2230 slot.
  6. Close up and power on
Reconnect the battery if you disconnected it, refit the base cover and screws, then plug in and start the laptop.
  7. Check that the part is detected
Open the BIOS setup and confirm the new memory total and drive show up. Dell's service manual lists the M.2 drive as "M.2 PCIe SSD-0" and the 2.5" drive as "SATA-0". Then install or restore your operating system if needed.

Good to know

  • Dell's 16 GB maximum conflicts with the per-slot 16 GB module listing; 32 GB is not officially supported and is unconfirmed.
  • Dell doesn't say whether faster RAM would run faster than 2666 MT/s on integrated-graphics units.
  • Units with the 54 Whr battery do not support a 2.5" drive and may lack the bay, bracket or cable.
  • Optane support depends on the processor: H20 is listed for 11th-gen Intel only, and Dell's PDF also mentions H10.
  • Dell's documents don't name the CPU socket. The soldered-chip conclusion is based on how these 15 W mobile processors are normally built.
  • "Intel 11th Gen" covers only part of the lineup; some units use 10th-gen, Pentium or Celeron chips. Dell's spec PDF processor table is hard to read, so check core and thread counts on Dell's shop spec page.
  • The spec pages cover the whole 3511 family, so check your unit's exact configuration against its service tag.
