Dell Inspirion 7791 upgrades
Released 2019 · on sale
Dell Inspiron 17 7791 2-in-1 (2019). The CPU is soldered (BGA 1528) and NOT replaceable — buy the i5-10210U / i7-10510U tier you need up front; the optional MX-class discrete GPU is also soldered. RAM and storage upgrades are covered by Dell's service manual and are user-serviceable. No CPU slot is provided here. microSD card reader only (no full-size SD), no optical drive and no Ethernet port. Do not confuse this 7791 2-in-1 with the 7790 clamshell — internals differ.

2× DDR4 SO-DIMM (260-pin), non-ECC 2 × DDR4 SO-DIMM · up to 16 GB total · 2666 MT/s
Both slots are user-accessible, no soldered memory. Buy DDR4-2666 (PC4-21300) 260-pin SO-DIMMs; 3200 MT/s modules work but downclock to 2666, so don't pay extra. Dell's validated ceiling is 16 GB total (e.g. 2×8 GB) — 32 GB is not supported by any manufacturer source. Matched pairs give dual-channel, which helps the integrated UHD graphics. 4/8/16 GB modules all confirmed usable.

1× M.2 2230/2280 NVMe (PCIe Gen 3 x4) SSD M.2 2230 / M.2 2280 (NVMe)
Single M.2 slot accepting both 2230 and 2280 NVMe drives. The bus is Comet Lake-U PCIe Gen 3 x4 (~3.5 GB/s); Gen 4/Gen 5 SSDs physically fit but run at Gen 3 speed, so don't overpay. No documented capacity limit — 2 TB drives are widely reported working. Can be populated at the same time as the 2.5" bay.

1× 2.5" SATA III drive bay SSD / HDD 2.5" (SATA)
Holds one 2.5" HDD or SSD on SATA III 6 Gb/s, usable alongside the M.2 drive. Forum users report the bracket, screws and flat SATA ribbon cable are stowed inside the chassis — open the unit to confirm before buying spares (anecdotal, may vary by SKU). No documented thickness limit: 7 mm drives should fit, but verify before buying a 9.5 mm model. A 2 TB 2.5" SATA SSD is confirmed working.
