ASUS VivoBook 15 X512DA upgrades

Released 2019 · on sale

CPU is soldered (AMD BGA FP5, Ryzen 3000U 'Picasso' / Athlon 300U-series, 15 W) — no CPU slot and no CPU upgrade path; pick the tier you need up front. No dGPU slot and no other expansion. A microSD reader is present but is not an upgrade slot. Beware ASUS's global spec page mixing Intel X512FA/UA limits (e.g. '8 GB max') with the AMD X512DA — the DA supports 12 GB official maximum. WLAN may be a replaceable M.2 2230 card on some units, soldered on others.

1x free DDR4 SO-DIMM (4 GB soldered) DDR4 SO-DIMM · 4 GB soldered · up to 12 GB total · 2400 MT/s

Only 1 user-accessible slot: 4 GB DDR4-2400 is soldered, plus 1x 260-pin DDR4 SO-DIMM. ASUS validates 8 GB modules (12 GB total); 16 GB modules (20 GB total) are widely reported to work on Picasso but are unofficial — buy with returns. Use non-ECC, unbuffered 1.2 V SO-DIMM; 2666/3200 sticks down-clock to 2400. Vega iGPU shares system RAM, so extra RAM boosts graphics too. Flex/dual-channel only up to the matched amount.

1x M.2 2280 + 1x 2.5" SATA bay 2 × SSD / HDD M.2 2280 / 2.5" (NVMe / SATA) · max 7 mm thick

M.2 2280 Key-M slot is PCIe 3.0 x2 (~1.7 GB/s) and also accepts M.2 SATA; 2242/2260 need an unsupplied bracket. ASUS warns of surface-mounted components near the M.2 slot — check your regional support page before buying a double-sided/thick drive. 2.5" SATA bay needs the ASUS HDD cable/bracket if your SKU shipped SSD-only; stick to 7 mm drives (9.5 mm won't fit — limit inferred from the 19.9 mm chassis, not officially stated). No documented aftermarket max capacity.
