Apple iMac (Retina 5K, 27-inch, 2020) upgrades

Released 2020 · end of life

CPU: not user-upgradeable. The 10th-gen Comet Lake-S desktop CPUs (65W-125W class, likely LGA1200) are treated as fixed at purchase — Apple publishes no socket type or supported CPU list and offers no processor upgrade procedure; reaching it requires full teardown with adhesive-bonded display removal. No CPU slot is offered here. Storage: not user-upgradeable and no slot object is listed — 2020 iMac 27" is SSD-only (256GB-8TB, NVMe-class via T2) with no M.2 socket, no 2.5"/3.5" bay and no SATA option; the NAND/blade is tied to the T2 chip and soldered/non-serviceable per teardowns, so configure capacity at purchase and expand via Thunderbolt 3 NVMe enclosures or network storage. SDXC UHS-II slot is removable media only, not boot storage. 10Gb Ethernet and nano-texture glass are BTO-only. Check Activation Lock/T2 status on used units.

4x 260-pin DDR4-2666 SO-DIMM slots 4 × DDR4 SO-DIMM · up to 128 GB total · 2666 MT/s

All 4 slots are behind the user-accessible RAM door on the back. Use 1.2V unbuffered, non-ECC, non-parity 260-pin SO-DIMMs; 3200MT/s modules work but downclock to 2666. ECC/registered/parity modules are explicitly unsupported. Apple recommends matched modules; use pairs in slots 1+3 / 2+4 for dual-channel. With mixed-size kits the spread arrangement can drop memory to 2133MHz — verify speed in About This Mac. Kingston's 64GB claim is a catalogue limit, not the machine's; 4x32GB reaches 128GB.
