Upgrade guide: Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3i (15", 2021) / 15IHU6
Aktualisiert am 30. Oktober 2026 · Erstellt anhand der verifizierten Spezifikationen dieses Geräts
The Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3i (15", 2021), also called the 15IHU6, is one of the easier gaming laptops to upgrade at home. Both RAM slots are socketed, there is room for a second or third drive, and the bottom cover is designed to be opened by the owner. A few quirks are worth knowing before you order anything, especially around the drive bays. One identity check first: the Intel model is the IdeaPad Gaming 3i 15IHU6, machine types 82K1 and 82MG. Machine type 82K2 is the AMD IdeaPad Gaming 3 15ACH6, not the 15IHU6. The memory and storage layouts are the same across both families, so most of this guide applies either way — but the CPU answers differ. If a listing mixes the names, check the machine type on the sticker under the laptop.

RAM upgrade
The 15IHU6 has two physical DDR4 SO-DIMM slots and nothing is soldered to the board, so whatever memory is in there can come out. The slots take DDR4 SO-DIMM (260-pin, 1.2 V) non-ECC, unbuffered modules at up to DDR4-3200. Faster modules will simply run at 3200, so don't pay extra for high-speed gaming memory.
Lenovo validates 16 GB modules, giving 32 GB total (2 x 16 GB), and that is the safe ceiling. Kingston's configurator agrees on 32 GB. 2 x 32 GB (64 GB) modules often work in practice, but neither Lenovo nor Kingston validates that combination, so treat it as a gamble. ECC, registered or server memory will not work at all.
The biggest real-world gain is usually going dual-channel. Many units ship with a single 8 GB stick, which halves memory bandwidth and costs noticeable gaming frame rates. If that's you, replace it with a matched pair rather than adding one odd stick. 2 x 8 GB is the sweet spot; 2 x 16 GB if you also stream, edit video or keep lots of apps open.
Buying tip: buy a matched pair of DDR4-3200 SO-DIMM kits from a brand with a lifetime warranty, and skip anything labelled ECC, registered or 'for server'.
Kauftipps
- Matched pair of DDR4-3200 SO-DIMM, non-ECC unbuffered, 1.2 V.
- 16 GB per module is validated; 32 GB modules are unvalidated territory.
- Don't pay for speeds above 3200 — the laptop clocks them down.

Storage upgrade
This chassis has three drive bays, but only two can be populated at the same time. The 2.5" bay and the full-length M.2 2280 bay share the same physical space and cabling, so they are mutually exclusive. The working combinations are: 2.5" SATA drive plus an M.2 2242 drive, or an M.2 2242 plus an M.2 2280.
What fits in each bay:
- 2.5" bay: SATA HDD or SATA SSD, up to 7 mm thick. Thicker 9.5 mm drives will not close the case.
- M.2 2242 slot: NVMe PCIe 3.0 x4 — the faster of the two M.2 slots. Single-sided drives only.
- M.2 2280 slot: NVMe PCIe 3.0 x2 (roughly a 2 GB/s ceiling). Also single-sided only.
That last point surprises people: the long 'standard' slot is the slow one. Don't pay a premium for a Gen4 or Gen5 drive in the 2280 slot — a good mid-range Gen3 drive already saturates it. Conversely, the shorter 2242 slot runs at full x4 speed. Note that Gen4 drives installed in either slot run at Gen3 speeds due to the M.2 SSD adapter limitation.
Plan before you buy. If your machine boots from a 2280 drive (the usual config), you cannot add a 2.5" HDD or SSD as well — your upgrade is either a bigger 2280, or a 2242 plus a 2.5" drive. M.2 2242 drives are uncommon, so order one before you open the case.
Lenovo's 512 GB and 1 TB figures are the sizes it has tested, not hard limits. Larger drives (1–2 TB M.2, 2 TB 2.5") are widely reported to work as long as they physically fit and, for M.2, are single-sided. There is no SD or microSD card slot on this model, and the USB-C port is data-only with no Thunderbolt.
Kauftipps
- Decide your two-bay combo first: 2.5" + 2242, or 2242 + 2280.
- Don't buy a Gen4 drive for the 2280 slot — it runs at PCIe 3.0 x2.
- M.2 2242 drives are single-sided only and hard to find locally; order ahead.
- 2.5" drives must be no more than 7 mm thick.
So rüstest du auf
Bevor du startest
- Back up anything important before you touch the hardware.
- Shut the laptop down fully and unplug the charger.
- Ground yourself — touch a metal object or use an anti-static strap — and work on a clean, non-static surface.
- Open the case. The bottom cover is user-serviceable per Lenovo's user guide; check your regional warranty terms first. The guide has the exact screw locations and any release latches, so use it rather than guessing.
- Install the new part, close the case and reconnect power.
- Power on and check that the BIOS/firmware sees the new memory or drive, then confirm in your operating system as well.
Schritte
- Back up your data
Copy anything you cannot lose before you open the machine. - Power off and unplug
Shut down fully, not sleep or hibernate, and disconnect the charger. - Ground yourself
Discharge static by touching a grounded metal object, and avoid working on carpet. - Open the case
Remove the bottom cover. The owner's manual has the exact disassembly steps; follow those rather than a random video. - Install the part
Seat the RAM or drive firmly at the correct angle and secure it. For drives, check the bay combination rules above first. - Close and check
Refit the cover, power on, and confirm the BIOS/firmware reports the new part before booting into your system.
Gut zu wissen
- Check your laptop's machine type (82K1/82MG for the Intel 15IHU6) before ordering parts.
- Lenovo's stated maxima are its tested offerings, not engineering limits — larger parts generally work but are unvalidated.
Häufig gestellte Fragen
How much RAM can the Lenovo IdeaPad Gaming 3 15IHU6 take?
Lenovo validates 2 x 16 GB, so 32 GB is the safe maximum. 2 x 32 GB (64 GB) often works but is not validated by Lenovo or Kingston, so buy it only if you are comfortable with the risk. Both slots are socketed, and the memory must be DDR4 SO-DIMM non-ECC unbuffered.
Can I add a second SSD to the IdeaPad Gaming 3 15IHU6?
Yes, but not every combination works. There are three bays and only two can be used at once, because the 2.5" bay and the M.2 2280 bay share space and cabling. Valid pairs are 2.5" SATA plus M.2 2242, or M.2 2242 plus M.2 2280. If your laptop boots from a 2280 drive, you cannot also fit a 2.5" drive.
Can you upgrade the CPU in the IdeaPad Gaming 3 15IHU6?
No. The processor and the discrete GPU are both soldered to the motherboard. The Intel model uses 11th-gen Tiger Lake-H35 chips (i5-11300H/11320H, i7-11370H/11390H) and there is no socket or supported swap to a newer generation.
Does it support PCIe Gen4 NVMe drives?
The M.2 2242 slot is PCIe 3.0 x4 and the M.2 2280 slot is PCIe 3.0 x2. A Gen4 drive will work but run at Gen3 speeds (and only x2 in the 2280 slot), so a Gen4 drive is not worth paying extra for here.
What RAM speed does the IdeaPad Gaming 3 15IHU6 use?
DDR4-3200 (PC4-25600), in DDR4 SO-DIMM form at 1.2 V. Faster modules work but are clocked down to 3200. Buy a matched pair to get dual-channel performance.
Is machine type 82K2 the same laptop?
No. 82K2 is the AMD IdeaPad Gaming 3 15ACH6. The Intel 15IHU6 is machine type 82K1 or 82MG. The RAM and storage layouts are the same across both, but the CPU differs — the AMD model uses soldered Ryzen 5000H chips, which are also not upgradeable.
