Intel NUC 11 Performance Kit (Panther Canyon) upgrade guide
Aktualisiert am 27. Oktober 2026 · Erstellt anhand der verifizierten Spezifikationen dieses Geräts
The Intel NUC 11 Performance Kit — sold as NUC11PAHi3, NUC11PAHi5 and NUC11PAHi7, and nicknamed Panther Canyon — is one of the friendlier mini PCs to upgrade. Memory and storage are user-replaceable and use standard parts you can buy anywhere. The processor is another story: it is soldered down and fixed for life. Here is what fits in each category, the limits, and what to check before you buy.
Auf einen Blick
- Two DDR4 SO-DIMM slots take up to 64 GB total (32 GB per module).
- One M.2 slot takes a 2280 or 2242 NVMe or SATA SSD; the Tall chassis also has a 2.5-inch SATA bay.
- The CPU is soldered and cannot be upgraded — you would have to replace the whole unit.

Intel ARK 'Launch Date: Q1'21' (quarter-level in the source, therefore recorded at YYYY precision). The Technical Product Specification rev 1.0 is dated January 2021. Applies to the NUC 11 Performance family (NUC11PAK slim / NUC11PAH tall / NUC11PAQ). Launch was limited and largely Asia-Pacific. Quelle ↗ |

Schätzung
Scope: NUC11PAKi3 and NUC11PAKi7 slim kits only (NUC11PAKi5 stayed 'Launched'). Intel's own statement is only the ARK status field 'Discontinued', which carries no date; the December 2021 date is trade-press reporting of that status change, hence 'estimate'. RAM: two DDR4 SO-DIMM slots, up to 64 GB
There are two 260-pin DDR4 SO-DIMM sockets on the board, and none of the memory is soldered, so whatever you install is yours to choose. The machine takes DDR4-3200 (PC4-25600) SO-DIMMs at 1.2V, unbuffered and non-ECC. ECC or registered server modules will not work — standard laptop DDR4 is what you want.
The ceiling is 32 GB per module, for 64 GB total across the two slots. Speed-wise, DDR4-3200 is the top supported rate.
Two things make a real difference here. First, if you are only fitting one module, put it in the lower socket. Second, buy two identical modules if you can. The kit runs dual-channel memory, and a single stick noticeably hurts the Iris Xe integrated graphics, which depend on memory bandwidth.
Kauftipps
- Matched pair of DDR4-3200 SO-DIMMs, 1.2V, non-ECC, unbuffered.
- Check Intel's Product Compatibility Tool for validated modules if you want to be sure.
- Skip ECC or registered memory entirely.

Storage: one M.2 slot, plus a 2.5-inch bay on the Tall model
There is a single M.2 Key M slot on the board. It accepts 2280-length cards by default, and 2242-length cards if you move the standoff to the 42 mm position. Either PCIe x4 Gen4 NVMe or SATA3 SSDs work, and Intel Optane Memory/H10 is supported. There is no second M.2 slot.
A SATA M.2 drive will function, but it is much slower than an NVMe one — Gen4 NVMe is the intended configuration and the sensible buy. Intel's own pages do not state a capacity ceiling; reseller Simply NUC validates up to 8 TB for NVMe and 2 TB for SATA M.2. Treat those as tested limits rather than guaranteed maximums, and check Intel's Product Compatibility Tool for validated drives.
On top of that, the Tall H chassis (NUC11PAHi3 / i5 / i7) has a 2.5-inch SATA3 bay on a daughter card in the lid. Drives here are limited to 7 mm in height — most 9.5 mm and 15 mm hard drives simply will not close. A thin SSD or a slim HDD is the way to go. Simply NUC validates up to 8 TB here as well, though that is a reseller figure, not an Intel guarantee.
The bay is the big thing to check before buying, because the chassis variants differ. The Slim K model (NUC11PAKi3 / i5 / i7) has no 2.5-inch bay at all, and the Q variant is different again. All three share the same motherboard (NUC11PABiX). If you want that extra bay, make sure the listing is for the Tall H version. If you end up with the Slim model, the built-in SDXC UHS-II card slot (Simply NUC validates up to 2 TB) is your only easy extra storage.
Kauftipps
- NVMe Gen4 M.2 2280 drive for the main slot — or 2242 if you move the standoff.
- Thin 7 mm 2.5-inch SSD for the Tall chassis; skip regular-height laptop hard drives.
- Confirm the chassis letter (H, K or Q) before paying — the 2.5-inch bay is not universal.
- Check Intel's Product Compatibility Tool before buying a large or unusual drive.

So rüstest du auf
Bevor du startest
- Back up your data and anything on the drive you are touching.
- Shut the machine down fully and unplug the power adapter and all cables.
- Ground yourself — touch a grounded metal object or use an anti-static strap — before handling components.
- Open the case. Intel's owner's guide for the NUC 11 Performance Kit has the exact disassembly steps for your chassis, so have it to hand for the small details.
- Install the RAM module or drive in its slot, using the screws and standoffs already in the machine (for a 2242 M.2 card, move the standoff to the short position first).
- Close the case, reconnect the power, and start the machine.
- Check that the BIOS shows the new memory capacity or the new drive before you install an operating system or start copying data back.
Gut zu wissen
- Capacity ceilings for storage come from reseller Simply NUC rather than Intel. Intel's own pages do not state them, so check the Product Compatibility Tool for validated parts.
- Intel's documentation for the 2.5-inch bay occasionally says 'M.2' where it means 2.5-inch SATA drives — the 7 mm height limit still applies.
- The chassis variants (H, K and Q) share a motherboard but differ in features, so verify which one you are buying.
Häufig gestellte Fragen
How much RAM can the Intel NUC 11 Performance Kit take?
64 GB total — 32 GB in each of the two DDR4 SO-DIMM slots, at DDR4-3200 speeds. The memory must be 1.2V, non-ECC and unbuffered.
Can I upgrade the CPU in the NUC 11 Performance Kit?
No. The i3-1115G4, i5-1135G7 or i7-1165G7 is soldered to the board and cannot be replaced. You would have to swap the whole unit for a faster model.
Does the NUC 11 Performance Kit support NVMe SSDs?
Yes. The M.2 Key M slot takes PCIe x4 Gen4 NVMe drives (and SATA3 M.2 drives, though those are much slower). It also accepts Intel Optane Memory/H10.
Can I add a second SSD or a 2.5-inch drive?
There is no second M.2 slot. However, the Tall H chassis (NUC11PAHi3 / i5 / i7) has a 2.5-inch SATA bay that fits drives up to 7 mm thick. The Slim K model has no such bay.
What size M.2 SSD fits the NUC 11 Performance Kit?
Both 2280 and 2242 cards fit. The 2280 length is the default; for a 2242 card you move the standoff to the shorter position.
How much storage can the NUC 11 Performance Kit hold?
Intel does not publish a capacity ceiling. Reseller Simply NUC validates up to 8 TB NVMe or 2 TB SATA in the M.2 slot, and up to 8 TB in the 2.5-inch bay. Check Intel's Product Compatibility Tool for validated drives before buying.
