Memory (RAM) upgrades

The DL325 Gen11 has 12 DIMM slots, one DIMM per channel. All memory is in these slots; nothing is soldered. It takes HPE DDR5 SmartMemory RDIMMs (registered, ECC) only. LRDIMMs and Persistent Memory are not supported. The maximum is 256 GB per module and 3 TB (12 x 256 GB) in total.

Speed depends on your processor. A 5th Gen EPYC 9005 CPU runs memory up to 6400 MT/s, while a 4th Gen EPYC 9004 caps it at 4800 MT/s. For 5th Gen, HPE lists 16, 32, 64, 96, 128 and 256 GB modules. For 4th Gen, the newer HPE QuickSpecs list 16, 32, 64, 96 and 128 GB, while the older one also lists a 256 GB module.

The number of DIMMs must be 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12. You can't mix x4 and x8 DIMMs, and you can't mix 3DS and non-3DS DIMMs. 256 GB DIMMs need performance or liquid-cooling fan kits, depending on ambient temperature.

HPE's documents disagree on a few details. The user guide's part-number decoder mentions UDIMM and 4400 MT/s, but the QuickSpecs list only RDIMM, so treat the decoder as generic and buy RDIMMs. The 4800 MT/s CAS timings and the rank of the 128 GB module also differ between the older and newer QuickSpecs.

Kauftipps

  • Buy HPE SmartMemory RDIMMs only; check the current SmartMemory QuickSpecs, as availability depends on HPE certification.
  • Fill 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12 slots, using identical modules where you can.
  • Don't pay for 6400 MT/s memory unless your server has a 5th Gen EPYC 9005 CPU.
  • Planning 256 GB modules? Budget for a performance or liquid-cooling fan kit too.

Storage upgrades

What you can fit depends on your CTO build, so confirm your bay layout before buying. The 4LFF build has four 3.5-inch hot-plug bays taking SAS or SATA hard drives, up to 20 TB each. Builds with 2.5-inch bays (8SFF or 10SFF) take SAS, SATA or NVMe U.3 SSDs, listed up to 10 x 7.68 TB SAS/SATA or 10 x 15.36 TB NVMe. Which drive type your bays support depends on the build.

For internal boot drives there is an M.2 enablement kit holding two drives: NVMe 22110 up to 1.92 TB each, or SATA 2280 up to 480 GB each. These are internal, have no RAID and are not hot-swappable. The alternative is the NS204i-u boot device, which is hot-plug, comes with two 480 GB M.2 NVMe SSDs and offers RAID 1. It needs the low-profile secondary riser (P55029-B21). You can fit only one of the NS204i-u or the M.2 kit per server.

The newer HPE QuickSpecs also list a 20-bay EDSFF E3.S NVMe configuration (up to 20 x 15.36 TB); the older QuickSpecs omit it. It is a different chassis build, not an upgrade for the other bays. An optional DVD drive is available on 8SFF and 4LFF builds.

HPE's documents we have don't state drive thickness limits or the PCIe generation of the M.2, U.3 and E3.S interfaces. Check the QuickSpecs or user guide before buying.

Kauftipps

  • Check whether your server is 4LFF, 8SFF, 10SFF or E3.S before choosing drives.
  • Choose the M.2 kit or the NS204i-u, not both; the NS204i-u needs the low-profile secondary riser.
  • Pick the M.2 kit only if you don't need RAID or hot-swap for the boot drive.
  • Confirm drive thickness with HPE, as it isn't documented.

So rüstest du auf

Bevor du startest

  • Check your server's drive bay layout (4LFF, 8SFF, 10SFF or E3.S) and which CPU generation it has.
  • Back up your data and note your current BIOS and firmware versions.
  • Have the HPE ProLiant DL325 Gen11 user guide to hand for exact disassembly steps.
  • If you plan a CPU change, check cooling needs first: high-wattage CPUs need extra fan or liquid-cooling kits.

Schritte

  1. Back up and plan
Back up your data and confirm the part you bought matches the supported types above (RDIMM for memory, the right drive type for your bays).
  2. Power off and unplug
Shut the server down properly, then remove all power cables and any other attached cables.
  3. Ground yourself
Use an anti-static wrist strap or touch bare metal on the chassis before handling parts, and hold components by their edges.
  4. Open the server
Follow the owner's manual to remove the access panel and any air baffles or other parts in the way. Exact steps depend on your configuration.
  5. Install memory
Fit DIMMs only after the processor is installed. Populate 1, 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 or 12 slots with matching RDIMMs, and don't mix x4 with x8 or 3DS with non-3DS modules.
  6. Install drives
For hot-plug bays, insert the drive into a bay of the right type. For the internal M.2 kit or the NS204i-u, follow the owner's manual, remembering that only one of the two is supported.
  7. Close and reconnect
Refit the panel and any removed parts, then reconnect the cables and power.
  8. Check it is recognised
Power on and confirm the BIOS or firmware shows the new memory total and drives. If it doesn't, power down and check that the parts are seated and the DIMM count and type are supported.

Gut zu wissen

  • HPE's two QuickSpecs versions disagree on some details: 256 GB support on 4th Gen, the 128 GB module's rank, CAS timings, the secondary riser and EDSFF support.
  • Drive thickness limits and the PCIe generation of the M.2, U.3 and E3.S interfaces are not stated in the documents we have.
  • The bay layout depends on the CTO build, so confirm yours before ordering drives.
  • Two GPU or slot pairings (GPU and slot 21, or GPU2 and slot 1) share about 112 GB/s because of an AMD CPU limit.
  • HPE hasn't published end-of-sale or end-of-support dates for this model in the documents we have; check support.hpe.com.
