HP EliteBook 840 G6 upgrade guide

Aktualisiert am 10. Oktober 2026 · Erstellt anhand der verifizierten Spezifikationen dieses Geräts

The HP EliteBook 840 G6 (also sold as the EliteBook 840 Gen6, and as the EliteBook 846 G6, which shares the same chassis and the same service guide) is friendly to upgrades in two ways and stubborn in one. You get two memory slots and a standard M.2 drive slot, both easy to reach. The processor, however, is soldered to the board and can never be swapped. Here's what fits, what to watch out for, and how to buy smart.

Auf einen Blick

  • RAM: 2 x DDR4 SO-DIMM slots, nothing soldered, officially up to 32 GB (2 x 16 GB)
  • Storage: one M.2 2280 slot for PCIe NVMe or M.2 SATA, officially up to 2 TB
  • CPU: soldered (BGA 1528, Whiskey Lake) - no upgrade path
  • Check your unit's product number on HP's support page: some options (card reader, WWAN) vary by configuration

Memory (RAM)

What fits: two DDR4 SO-DIMM slots (260-pin), both free - no memory is soldered to the board, so you can fill or replace both. You need standard non-ECC, unbuffered DDR4 SO-DIMMs; ECC or registered modules are not supported. HP's documents describe 4 GB, 8 GB and 16 GB configurations, including single-stick and paired setups.

Speed: the platform runs memory at DDR4-2400. HP's parts list sometimes labels modules as DDR4-2666 (meaning faster sticks were shipped), but they run at 2400 MT/s here. DDR4-2666 or DDR4-3200 sticks will work fine - they simply clock down to 2400. If you mix speeds, the system runs everything at the slower speed, so matching sticks are the neat option.

Limits: the supported ceiling is 32 GB total (2 x 16 GB). Be aware that one HP QuickSpec document for the 840/850 G6 family claims 64 GB (2 x 32 GB), which contradicts HP's own Maintenance & Service Guide and product spec sheet - both say 32 GB - and Intel lists the i7-8565U at 32 GB as well. Some owners report 2 x 32 GB working on Whiskey Lake systems, but that's outside HP's spec and not guaranteed. Plan around 32 GB.

Buying tips: 2 x 16 GB DDR4-2400/2666/3200 SO-DIMMs is the sweet spot; don't pay extra for high-speed ratings, since they'll run at 2400 anyway. Any reputable brand works; HP recommends its own modules for compatibility.

Kauftipps

  • Buy two matching DDR4 SO-DIMMs (2 x 16 GB for the supported 32 GB maximum)
  • Don't overspend on DDR4-3200 - it runs at 2400 MT/s here
  • Avoid ECC or registered server memory; you need standard unbuffered notebook RAM

Storage (SSD)

What fits: a single M.2 2280 (22 x 80 mm) slot that accepts either a PCIe NVMe Gen3 x4 drive or an M.2 SATA-3 drive. There is no 2.5-inch bay, no second M.2 slot and no optical drive - one drive is all you get. If your machine came with a small SATA M.2 (128 GB or 256 GB), you can move up to any NVMe Gen3 drive for a big speed boost; the slot handles both interfaces.

Limits: HP documents drives up to 2 TB. Larger 4 TB modules may physically and functionally work, but they're outside HP's spec and not guaranteed. Only the 2280 length is officially documented - 2242 or 2260 drives would need a bracket or adapter that HP doesn't list. Also check clearance before buying a double-sided (chips on both sides) module: HP's own parts are single-sided, so a thick drive may not fit.

A note on special drives: Opal 2 self-encrypting and FIPS-140-2 models are separate SKUs - a plain drive won't give you hardware encryption. If you're looking at an Intel Optane H10 configuration, remember it's an acceleration module (Optane plus QLC storage on one stick), not extra RAM, and it needs a supporting BIOS, Windows 10 64-bit and the Intel RST driver.

Buying tips: an M.2 2280 NVMe Gen3 x4 drive is the best all-round choice. Older SATA M.2 drives work too, just more slowly. Verify your exact configuration on HP's support page using your unit's product number before buying extras like a microSD reader accessory or WWAN module - these vary by configuration, and WWAN isn't confirmed for all units.

Kauftipps

  • Pick an M.2 2280 NVMe Gen3 x4 SSD up to 2 TB for guaranteed compatibility
  • Choose a single-sided module to avoid clearance issues
  • Check your product number on HP's support page before assuming card reader or WWAN features exist on your unit

So rüstest du auf

Bevor du startest

  • Back up your data first - drive swaps and mis-seated RAM are the usual causes of data loss and boot problems
  • Power the laptop off completely and unplug the charger
  • Ground yourself (touch a metal object or use an anti-static strap) before handling components
  • Open the case - see the owner's manual / Maintenance & Service Guide for the exact disassembly steps and screw locations for your unit
  • Install the new RAM module(s) or M.2 SSD
  • Close the case and reconnect power
  • Start the laptop and check that the BIOS/firmware recognizes the new part before booting into your OS

Schritte

  1. Back up your data
Save anything important before opening the case.
  2. Power off and unplug
Shut the laptop down fully and disconnect the charger.
  3. Ground yourself
Discharge static - it's the invisible enemy of RAM and SSDs.
  4. Open the case
Follow the disassembly instructions in HP's Maintenance & Service Guide for the exact screw and cover procedure.
  5. Install the part
Seat the SO-DIMM or M.2 2280 drive firmly at the correct angle, then press it flat and secure it.
  6. Close and power on
Reassemble, plug in, and check the BIOS recognizes the new hardware before booting normally.

Gut zu wissen

  • The 64 GB maximum listed in one QuickSpec document contradicts HP's service guide, spec sheet and Intel's CPU limits - 32 GB is the safe figure.
  • Only the 2280 M.2 length is officially documented; 2242/2260 drives need an adapter HP doesn't list.
  • 4 TB M.2 drives may work but are outside HP's spec, and double-sided modules may not clear.
  • Card reader and WWAN presence is configuration-dependent - verify against your unit's product number on HP's support page.

Häufig gestellte Fragen

How much RAM can the HP EliteBook 840 G6 take?

Up to 32 GB (2 x 16 GB), per HP's Maintenance & Service Guide and spec sheet. One QuickSpec PDF claims 64 GB, but that conflicts with HP's other documents and Intel's 32 GB limit for the i7-8565U - treat 32 GB as the safe supported figure.

Does the HP EliteBook 840 G6 support DDR4-2666 or faster RAM?

Yes - faster DDR4-2666/3200 SO-DIMMs work, but the platform runs them at 2400 MT/s. If you mix speeds, everything runs at the slower speed.

Can I upgrade the CPU in the EliteBook 840 G6?

No. The processor is soldered (BGA 1528, Whiskey Lake - i5-8265U/8365U, i7-8565U/8665U). Buy the configuration you need upfront.

How many SSDs does the EliteBook 840 G6 support?

One. There's a single M.2 2280 slot (NVMe or M.2 SATA), no 2.5-inch bay and no second M.2 slot. HP supports drives up to 2 TB.

Is the RAM soldered on the EliteBook 840 G6?

No. Both DDR4 SO-DIMM slots are free and customer-accessible, with nothing soldered to the board.

Does the EliteBook 840 G6 have a card reader or WWAN slot?

It depends on the configuration. These features vary by unit - check your specific product number on HP's support page before buying anything.
