HP EliteBook 6 G1a Notebook PC — RAM, SSD and CPU upgrade guide

Aktualisiert am 10. Oktober 2026 · Erstellt anhand der verifizierten Spezifikationen dieses Geräts

The HP EliteBook 6 G1a Notebook PC is a 14-inch business laptop sold in several guises: the EliteBook 640 G1a or 660 G1a depending on your region, a 6 G1ah variant, and a "Next Gen AI PC" version with newer Ryzen AI silicon. They share a chassis, but the boards and configurations differ, so check the exact product number printed on your unit before ordering any parts. Good news: the RAM and the main SSD are both upgradeable. The processor is not.

Memory (RAM)

The EliteBook 6 G1a has two SO-DIMM sockets for DDR5-5600 (262-pin) memory. Nothing is soldered on the board, so both modules can be swapped or added. The maximum is 32 GB per module, 64 GB in total. The memory is non-ECC and unbuffered; HP offers no ECC or registered option anywhere in its configuration lists, so buy ordinary laptop DDR5 SO-DIMMs (not desktop DIMMs).

What fits: DDR5 SO-DIMM modules up to 32 GB each. The system runs at 5600 MT/s. If you mix speeds, everything runs at the slower stick's speed, so matched modules are best. HP ships 12 GB and 24 GB module sizes in some configurations; these are unusual, non-standard densities with limited third-party supply, and HP explicitly warns that some third-party modules are non-standard and recommends HP-branded memory. If you want those sizes, stick to HP-branded or clearly validated modules.

Watch out for: buying a single stick. It works, but the laptop runs single-channel and the Radeon integrated graphics noticeably lose performance. Two matched modules give dual-channel. Also note the wording difference in HP's own documents: the QuickSpecs describe the memory upgrade as an IT or self-maintainer procedure, while the Maintenance and Service Guide calls the SO-DIMM slots customer-replaceable. You can do it yourself; just keep the original modules in case of warranty service.

Buying tips:
- Buy a matched pair of DDR5-5600 SO-DIMMs in the capacity you want, up to 2 x 32 GB.
- Prefer HP-branded or explicitly validated modules, especially for 12/24 GB sizes.
- Avoid mixing speeds or capacities; the slowest stick sets the pace.

Storage (SSD)

The primary bay takes one M.2 2280 (22 x 80 mm) NVMe drive on a PCIe Gen4 x4 interface. NVMe only — there is no SATA support and no 2.5-inch bay. HP's drive list tops out at 2 TB, which is the largest capacity the company offers for this model.

What fits: any M.2 2280 NVMe SSD. The slot is Gen4 x4, and HP states plainly that all Gen5 SSDs run at Gen4 speed in this system, so there is no point paying a premium for a Gen5 drive. If you care about hardware-backed BitLocker, check the drive's encryption spec: HP offers TCG Opal 2.0 self-encrypting drives on some SKUs and Pyrite 2.0 on others, and only Opal 2.0 gives full hardware-backed BitLocker/eDrive support. The cheaper "Value" drives are also markedly slower than the TLC options — roughly 3100/1200 MB/s read/write versus about 6400/5000 MB/s for TLC.

Second drive: some SKUs have an optional second M.2 slot, but it is available only in selected markets and with selected processors. Crucially, the secondary-storage connector must be chosen at purchase — if your laptop wasn't configured with it, you cannot add one later. If you think you'll ever want a second drive, check that at the time of buying the laptop. (HP's documents also list optional M.2 communications modules for WWAN; these are not user SSD bays.)

Regional variants matter here too. The EliteBook 6 G1a name spans Ryzen 200 and Ryzen AI 300 boards and 640/660/6 G1ah variants by region, and configuration lists differ. Verify your exact product number before ordering.

Buying tips:
- Get a Gen4 M.2 2280 NVMe drive; Gen5 offers no benefit here.
- 2 TB is the practical maximum HP supports.
- Need hardware encryption? Look for TCG Opal 2.0, not Pyrite 2.0.
- Don't count on a second drive unless your SKU has the connector.

So rüstest du auf

Bevor du startest

  • Back up your data before opening the case.
  • Power the laptop off completely and unplug the AC adapter.
  • Ground yourself to avoid static damage to the parts.
  • Open the case and install the new memory or SSD.
  • Close the case, reconnect power, and switch on.
  • Check that the BIOS and firmware see the new part at the expected capacity before you restore your data.
  • Follow the owner's manual or HP Maintenance and Service Guide for the exact disassembly steps for your specific variant; opening details differ between configurations. HP frames these upgrades as IT or self-maintainer procedures, so proceed with care and keep the original parts.

Schritte

  1. Back up
Save anything important before you start.
  2. Power off and unplug
Shut the laptop down fully and disconnect the AC adapter.
  3. Ground yourself
Discharge static so you don't damage the memory or SSD.
  4. Open the case
Follow the disassembly instructions in the HP Maintenance and Service Guide for your exact model.
  5. Install
Fit the SO-DIMM modules or M.2 2280 NVMe drive in the available slot.
  6. Close and boot
Reassemble the case, power on, and confirm the BIOS and firmware detect the new part correctly.

Gut zu wissen

  • The same EliteBook 6 G1a name covers 640 G1a, 660 G1a and 6 G1ah variants, Ryzen 200 and Ryzen AI 300 boards, and regional configurations. Confirm the exact product number before ordering parts.
  • HP's QuickSpecs and Maintenance and Service Guide disagree slightly on who may perform the upgrades: the QuickSpecs say IT or self-maintainers, while the service guide marks the SO-DIMM slots as customer-replaceable. HP also lists a 48 GB (2 x 24 GB) memory option in the service guide that the QuickSpecs don't show.

Häufig gestellte Fragen

How much RAM can the HP EliteBook 6 G1a take?

Up to 64 GB total: two DDR5-5600 SO-DIMM slots, 32 GB maximum per module. Nothing is soldered, so both slots can be upgraded. There is no ECC or registered option.

Does the EliteBook 6 G1a support 64 GB of RAM?

Yes. With two 32 GB DDR5 SO-DIMM modules installed, the system supports 64 GB. HP's Maintenance and Service Guide also lists a 48 GB (2 x 24 GB) factory configuration, though that option doesn't appear in the QuickSpecs memory list.

Can I upgrade the CPU in the EliteBook 6 G1a?

No. The processor is soldered to the system board — whether it's a Ryzen 200 series, a Ryzen 7 255H or a Ryzen AI 300 part. There is no socket, and HP treats the entire system board as the replaceable unit.

What SSD does the EliteBook 6 G1a use?

One M.2 2280 NVMe drive on PCIe Gen4 x4. It's NVMe only — no SATA drives and no 2.5-inch bay. HP offers drives up to 2 TB.

Can I add a second SSD?

Only if your SKU was configured with the secondary-storage connector at purchase. HP says the optional second M.2 slot is available only in selected markets and with selected processors, and the connector must be chosen when ordering the laptop. It cannot be added later to a machine that lacks it.

Should I buy a Gen5 NVMe SSD for the EliteBook 6 G1a?

No. HP states that all Gen5 SSDs in this system run at Gen4 speed, so you'd pay more for no benefit. A Gen4 M.2 2280 NVMe drive is the right choice.
