Gigabyte B650M DS3H upgrade guide: RAM, SSD and CPU
Aktualisiert am 27. Oktober 2026 · Erstellt anhand der verifizierten Spezifikationen dieses Geräts
The Gigabyte B650M DS3H is a micro-ATX board with a socketed CPU and four memory slots, so there is plenty you can add or swap yourself. This guide covers the three upgrades owners ask about most: more RAM, a bigger SSD and a faster processor. One thing to settle first: this board ships in several revisions. Gigabyte keeps separate specification pages and BIOS files for rev. 1.0/1.1/1.2 and for rev. 1.3, so look for the 'REV: X.X' marking printed on the board before you order parts or download firmware. The upgrades below apply across revisions, but BIOS files do not.

RAM: DDR5 only, four slots, 256 GB maximum
The B650M DS3H has four full-size DDR5 DIMM slots and none of the memory is soldered, so every stick is yours to choose. It takes DDR5 only — DDR4 modules physically and electrically do not fit — and it wants non-ECC unbuffered DIMMs (1Rx8, 2Rx8 or 1Rx16). ECC and registered server memory is not listed as supported.
The ceiling is 64 GB per module and 256 GB in total across the four slots. If you are only adding memory to an existing kit, note that the manual's placement rules are specific: one module goes in DDR5_A2, and a two-module kit goes in A2 plus B2. Filling all four slots is supported, but it is the hardest configuration to run fast.
Speed needs a caveat, because Gigabyte's documents disagree. The user's manual lists DDR5 5200/4800/4400 MT/s, while the current spec pages advertise up to DDR5-8000 (OC). The website figure is the later, overclocking-aware one: it is a best case with two modules running an EXPO or XMP profile (both AMD EXPO and Intel XMP are supported). Gigabyte warns that the CPU and the number of modules affect the achievable data rate, so expect to drop below the headline speed with four DIMMs or dense, multi-rank sticks. Anything above the baseline is effectively an overclock.
Buying tip: two sticks rather than four if speed matters, and check Gigabyte's Memory Support List for your exact kit before ordering.
Kauftipps
- Buy DDR5 non-ECC unbuffered DIMMs — DDR4 and ECC/registered memory will not work.
- Two modules run fastest; a four-stick kit will usually need a lower speed.
- Match a kit already on Gigabyte's Memory Support List for this board.

Storage: two M.2 NVMe slots and four SATA ports
There are two M.2 slots (M-key), labelled M2A_CPU and M2B_CPU, and both are wired straight to the processor rather than the chipset. They are PCIe/NVMe only: the manual states plainly that this motherboard only supports M.2 PCIe SSDs, so an M.2 SATA SSD will not work here at all.
Only 80 mm and 110 mm lengths are listed (2280 and 22110, including the wider 2580/25110 variants). Shorter 2230, 2242 and 2260 drives are not listed as supported, so shop for full-length drives. Gigabyte does not state a maximum drive capacity, so current NVMe SSD sizes are the practical limit.
Both slots run at PCIe 4.0 x4 with a Ryzen 7000 or 9000 processor. With Ryzen 8000-series Phoenix APUs the lanes are shared: Phoenix 1 chips can run either slot at x4 or x2, and on Phoenix 2 chips the second slot (M2B_CPU) drops to PCIe 4.0 x2. That is a real speed penalty for a drive in that slot, so if you have an 8000G APU, put your main SSD in the first slot.
For bulk storage there are four SATA 6 Gb/s ports (also backwards compatible with 3 Gb/s and 1.5 Gb/s drives). How many 2.5-inch or 3.5-inch drives you can physically mount depends on your case, not the motherboard. RAID 0, 1 and 10 are available for the NVMe drives and separately for the SATA drives, but you cannot mix an M.2 PCIe SSD and a SATA drive in the same array.
Buying tip: an M.2 2280 NVMe drive is the easy choice for either slot. Skip any listing that says 'M.2 SATA'.
Kauftipps
- NVMe (PCIe) M.2 drives only — M.2 SATA SSDs are explicitly unsupported.
- Choose 2280 or 22110 drives; 2230/2242/2260 sizes are not listed.
- With a Ryzen 8000G APU, keep your main drive in the first M.2 slot.

CPU: AMD AM5 socket, Ryzen 7000 / 8000G / 9000
The processor sits in a standard AMD AM5 (LGA1718) socket and is fully user-replaceable. Supported families are AMD Ryzen 7000, Ryzen 8000 (Phoenix APUs) and Ryzen 9000 series, but support is per-SKU and depends on the BIOS/AGESA version the board is running.
That makes firmware the one thing to sort before you shop. Older boards in the channel may not recognise a Ryzen 8000 or 9000 chip until the BIOS is updated, and Gigabyte's older boards may need a Ryzen 7000 processor installed just to flash the update. Check the revision marking on your board (rev. 1.0/1.1/1.2 and rev. 1.3 have different BIOS files), then check Gigabyte's CPU Support List for the BIOS version your chosen chip needs.
On power, Gigabyte does not state a maximum CPU TDP for this board in either the spec sheets or the manual's specification table. What you can see is the power delivery: an entry-level 6+2+1-phase digital VRM. 65 W-class Ryzen parts are the comfortable zone here. Before pairing a 170 W Ryzen 9 with this board, check the CPU Support List and weigh a stronger board instead — the spec pages give no official limit to rely on.
Also note what a Ryzen 8000 APU does to the expansion slot: the primary PCIe x16 slot runs at x16 with Ryzen 7000/9000, x8 with Phoenix 1 and x4 with Phoenix 2, and Gigabyte says that slot is intended for a graphics card or an NVMe SSD. If you are upgrading from an APU to a Ryzen 7000/9000 CPU, you will also need a discrete graphics card, since these chips' integrated graphics vary by SKU.
Buying tip: pick a CPU from Gigabyte's support list for your board revision, and prefer a 65 W part unless you know your board's firmware and cooling can handle more.
Kauftipps
- Verify the BIOS version your chosen CPU needs, and update before installing the chip.
- Confirm the exact SKU on Gigabyte's CPU Support List for your board revision.
- 65 W-class CPUs are the sensible match for this board's power delivery.

How to install any of these upgrades
The same safe routine covers RAM, SSDs and CPUs. Back up anything important first. Shut the system down properly, switch off the power supply and unplug the mains cable. Ground yourself — touch the bare case or use an anti-static strap — before handling parts. Open the case, install the component, close the case, reconnect power and start up, then enter the BIOS to confirm it detects what you fitted.
For memory, follow the slot order: a single module in DDR5_A2, a pair in A2 plus B2. The manual shows the slot layout and the retaining clips to press at each end of the DIMM socket.
For an M.2 drive, the manual's storage section shows the mounting positions and which lengths fit. Use the position matching your drive, and remember the board wants NVMe only. After installing, the drive should appear in the BIOS; if not, reseat it and check you have the right slot.
For a CPU, update the BIOS first if your chip needs a newer version — possibly with an older Ryzen 7000 chip already fitted. AM5 is an LGA socket, so handle the processor by its edges and leave the socket's pin protection in place until you are ready to fit the chip.
For exact case disassembly, mounting hardware and torque details, follow the owner's manual for your board revision. The manual also covers both this board and a sibling model, so read the notes tagged for the B650M DS3H and skip the sections that apply only to the other board.
