Dell OptiPlex 7080 Small Form Factor Upgrade Guide
Aktualisiert am 12. Oktober 2026 · Erstellt anhand der verifizierten Spezifikationen dieses Geräts
The Dell OptiPlex 7080 Small Form Factor is one of the easier business desktops to upgrade. It has four memory slots, room for an NVMe drive plus SATA drives, and a socketed processor. Dell sold Micro, Small Form Factor and Tower versions under the '7080' name, and they take different parts. Before you order anything, confirm your machine is the Small Form Factor (check the service tag on Dell's support site). Everything below is for the SFF chassis only. Dell's documents don't fully agree on a couple of details, and we flag those where they come up.

Memory (RAM)
The SFF has four 288-pin DDR4 UDIMM slots (DIMM1 to DIMM4 on the board), with no memory soldered down, so every module is user-replaceable. The maximum is 32 GB per slot and 128 GB in total (4 x 32 GB); the minimum configuration Dell lists is 4 GB. Only non-ECC, unbuffered desktop DIMMs work. Server memory - RDIMMs, ECC or registered modules - will not fit electrically or in the slots, so don't buy it even if the price looks good.
Kauftipps
- Buy DDR4 UDIMM 288-pin modules marked non-ECC and unbuffered.
- Buy matched pairs (2 or 4 identical modules) to run in dual channel. With the integrated graphics, a single stick measurably costs performance.
- RAM speed depends on the CPU you have: 2933 MHz with Core i7 or i9, 2666 MHz with i3 or i5. In Brazil, Dell states even i7/i9 systems run at 2666 MHz. Faster modules will simply run at these speeds.
- 32 GB modules work, but update the BIOS before relying on high-density DIMMs.

Storage (SSD and hard drive)
There is one M.2 storage connector on the board, accepting 2230 or 2280 NVMe drives (PCIe Gen 3 x4). The second M.2 connector on the board is the WLAN card slot - it is not for storage. Dell's documents don't list SATA-based M.2 drives for this slot, so stick to NVMe. Dell lists 2230 drives up to 512 GB and 2280 drives up to 2 TB, but those are Dell's validated sizes; larger third-party NVMe drives usually work - check with your BIOS revision. The board layout shows three SATA 3.0 connectors, and the chassis offers one 3.5-inch bay or up to two 2.5-inch bays, plus the slim optical bay, which can take another 2.5-inch drive with a caddy. The largest drive Dell documents is a 4 TB 3.5-inch model.
Kauftipps
- For the M.2 slot, buy an NVMe (PCIe) drive in 2230 or 2280 length. SATA M.2 drives are not documented for this slot.
- The 2230 length needs the mounting stud in the 2230 position; the 2280 uses the 2280 position.
- For the bays, plan around one 3.5-inch drive or two 2.5-inch drives, plus the M.2. A caddy lets you use the optical bay if you need another SATA drive.
- Dell ships 7 mm 2.5-inch drives. Standard 7 and 9.5 mm drives fit in practice, but this isn't stated explicitly in Dell's tables, and 15 mm drives are questionable in this tight chassis.

Processor (CPU)
The processor is socketed (LGA 1200) and can be upgraded, but the options are narrow. The Q470 chipset and Dell's BIOS support 10th-gen Intel Comet Lake processors only - 11th-gen Rocket Lake CPUs are not officially supported, even though the socket is physically the same. The Small Form Factor cooling and power supply are designed for 65 W chips, so 125 W K-series processors are not supported. The practical top end for an upgrade is a used Core i7-10700 or Core i9-10900 (65 W versions).
Kauftipps
- Buy a 10th-gen (Comet Lake) 65 W chip - for example a Core i7-10700 or Core i9-10900. Avoid 11th-gen parts and any 125 W K-series model.
- Check Dell's CPU support list for your exact BIOS revision before buying.
- A CPU swap also changes your memory ceiling: going to an i7 or i9 unlocks 2933 MHz RAM speeds.
So rüstest du auf
Bevor du startest
- Back up anything you care about before opening the case.
- Shut down the machine and unplug the power cable and all peripherals.
- Ground yourself - touch the metal chassis or use an anti-static strap - before handling parts.
- Open the case, install the new part, then close the case. Dell's manuals don't describe a release latch or screw for this chassis in detail, so use the service manual for the exact disassembly steps for your machine; the SFF service manual linked below covers component removal.
- Plug in, power on and enter the BIOS setup to confirm the new memory or drive is detected before booting into the operating system. Update the BIOS first if you are adding 32 GB DIMMs or a large NVMe drive.
Gut zu wissen
- Dell's manuals disagree on the number of M.2 slots: the board layout shows one storage connector (plus WLAN), while a BIOS string mentions two.
- 2.5-inch drive thickness (7/9.5 mm) is not explicitly documented for the bays - verify before buying a 15 mm drive.
- The maximum M.2 capacities are Dell's validated limits; larger third-party NVMe drives usually work but should be checked against your BIOS version.
Häufig gestellte Fragen
How much RAM can the OptiPlex 7080 SFF take?
128 GB total - four slots, up to 32 GB per module, DDR4 non-ECC unbuffered.
What RAM speed does the OptiPlex 7080 SFF support?
2933 MHz with Core i7 or i9 processors, 2666 MHz with Core i3 or i5. Dell also states 2666 MHz for i7/i9 systems in Brazil. Faster modules run at these speeds.
How many M.2 slots does the OptiPlex 7080 SFF have?
One storage slot (2230 or 2280, NVMe PCIe Gen 3 x4). The other M.2 connector on the board is for the WLAN card. Dell's manuals disagree - the BIOS page mentions two M.2 slots - but the board layout shows one storage connector, so assume one unless your board shows otherwise.
Does the OptiPlex 7080 SFF support 11th-gen CPUs?
No. The Q470 chipset and Dell's BIOS support 10th-gen Comet Lake processors only, despite the shared LGA 1200 socket.
Does the OptiPlex 7080 SFF support ECC memory?
No. It needs non-ECC, unbuffered DDR4 UDIMMs. Server RDIMM or ECC modules will not work.
Can I fit a larger M.2 drive than Dell lists?
Usually. Dell validates 2230 up to 512 GB and 2280 up to 2 TB, but larger third-party NVMe drives generally work - verify with your BIOS version.
